Pete Carroll will no longer be the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, but will instead take on an advisory role for the franchise. Owner Jody Allen announced on Wednesday.

The team’s most successful coach, The 72-year-old Carroll said he intends to return for the 2024 season. Seattle finished this year with a 9-8 record and did not make the playoffs.

In a statement, Allen said the move was „in the best interest of the franchise.“

„Pete is the most successful coach in Seahawks history, bringing the city their first Super Bowl title and having an enormous impact on the field and the community over the past 14 years,“ said Allen, sister of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. „His expertise in leadership and building a championship culture will continue to be an integral part of our organization in the future.“

Carroll was hired by the Seahawks in 2010 and compiled a record of 147-98-1, leading Seattle to its first Super Bowl victory in 2013. The team made the playoffs in 10 of those 14 seasons, winning two NFC championships and the NFC West five times.

After an unforgettable tenure as head coach of the New York Jets and three seasons at the helm of New England, Carroll found enormous success at the college level. He won two national championships at USC, where he coached two Heisman Trophy winners – Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. (Reggie Bush returned his 2005 trophy.) Under Carroll, the Trojans spent 33 consecutive weeks atop the AP Top-25 poll.
