The New York Giants announced on Thursday morning that they will be celebrating their 100th season by wearing „Century Red“ throwback uniforms in up to two games this fall.

The uniforms primarily honor the 1933 Giants led by Hall of Fame coach Steve Owen and players Mel Hein and Red Badgro, who competed in the very first NFL championship game, where they lost to the Chicago Bears 23-21.

The look under the shoulders was almost identical to what New York unveiled on Thursday. It included a red jersey with white numbers in a horizontal blue stripe that runs across the chest and around the back.

The jerseys, which also feature a blue collar and shoulder yoke that ends at the sleeves, were originally paired with a blue leather helmet with red stripes, but will now be worn with a winged helmet that is more reminiscent of their 1937-47 design.

The uniforms include solid tan pants and predominantly red socks with the same stripe pattern as the jerseys, along with the new 100th anniversary New York logo on the left shoulder.

„I feel like it’s dark and old-fashioned,“ said linebacker Bobby Okereke. „It’s a throwback to the 1920s and 1930s when it just got down and dirty out there. It’s a tribute to all the guys who played before us. They paved the way for us to play this great game.“

It is unclear whether the „Century Red“ jerseys will replace the Giants‘ throwback or Color Rush jerseys from 1980 to 1999 in the rotation. However, one must be dropped as the NFL only allows teams to have four jerseys available per season.

Additionally, they can only have two helmet shells until 2025, which likely means that the retro set from 1980-99 and the matching navy blue helmet will be put on hold for now. In that case, they will continue to switch the stickers on their blue standard helmets for the Color Rush set.
