We are sharing a recipe for healthy, homemade dog food! Hello friends! How are you? I hope your day is going well! Today, I am volunteering at the children’s school and looking forward to spending some time in the sauna afterwards. It should be a pretty relaxing day! For today’s post, I wanted to share Maisey’s latest obsession with you: homemade dog food. This simple recipe is full of nutrients and she absolutely loves it. (Do you see those crazy eyes? She is obsessed.) Honestly, I always felt a little guilty giving her packaged dog food because this little one LOVES fresh food. She constantly begs for broccoli and bell peppers (her two favorite dishes), stole a whole piece of chicken breast from the counter (and ate it on our new white sofa…), a whole chicken breast (with bones and all, thankfully no harm done), as well as ramen and curry. Knowing her taste profile, I poured her dry food into her bowl and felt a little sorry for the food connoisseur. To spruce things up, we put Fresh Pet from Whole Foods on top (so expensive and still felt like a block of packaged meat), but I knew there had to be a better way. I did a lot of research and found a recipe online that inspired me to finally make our own. I am excited to share all the details with you! It’s cheaper than Fresh Pet, contains organic, fresh-from-the-farm, and wild-caught ingredients, and I love knowing what’s in it. No preservatives or additives. Recipe for healthy homemade dog food Benefits of homemade dog food: Preparing your dog’s food at home can have many benefits, including: Control over ingredients: By preparing your dog’s food from scratch, you have full control over the quality of the ingredients used and ensure that your furry friend is getting only the best. Avoiding questionable ingredients: Conventional dog food often contains questionable ingredients like fillers, artificial preservatives, and low-quality meat that can harm your dog’s health. Customized nutrition: Homemade dog food allows you to tailor your dog’s diet to his specific needs, whether he needs a certain protein source or is allergic to certain ingredients. Increased digestibility: Whole, fresh ingredients are more easily digestible for dogs, leading to better nutrient absorption and overall health. Ingredients and their benefits: The recipe that inspired this one is Dr. Judy’s Puploaf. The full post is here and you can actually order it online! Since this is more of a highlight – Maisey still gets some I and Love and You Nude Super Food treats (you can order it from Thrive Market) in her bowl – I didn’t have to be so exact with the ingredient ratios. Ground beef: An excellent source of protein and essential amino acids for muscle health. Organ meats (heart, liver, gizzard, spleen): Rich in vitamins and minerals, including iron, zinc, and vitamin B12, essential for your dog’s overall health. Butternut squash: Packed with Vitamin A and C, fiber, and antioxidants to support immune function and digestion. Sardines: A great source of Omega-3 fatty acids that promote healthy skin and coat, reduce inflammation, and support joint health. Sardines are one of Maisey’s absolute favorite foods! Leafy greens: Provide essential vitamins and minerals like Vitamin K, calcium, and folic acid for overall health and vitality. Eggs: Rich in choline, protein, and essential nutrients. If using fresh eggs from the farm, you can also add the shell. Since these were organic supermarket products, I used the membrane inside the egg. Oysters: Rich in zinc and selenium, important for immune function and thyroid health. Cranberries: Rich in antioxidants and beneficial for urinary health. Broccoli: Contains fiber, vitamins, and minerals, including Vitamin C and calcium, for optimal health. Bell peppers: Provide Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and antioxidants to support immune function and eye health. Flaxseed oil: A source of Omega-3 fatty acids for healthy skin and coat, as well as joint support. Ginger: Has anti-inflammatory properties and supports digestion. Recipe for healthy homemade dog food Directions: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, organ meats, butternut squash, sardines, leafy greens, oysters, cranberries, broccoli, bell peppers, and ginger. I keep the flaxseed oil in the refrigerator and drizzle some over before serving. Mix the ingredients thoroughly to ensure even distribution. Place the mixture in a baking dish and bake lightly at 180°C for 20 to 30 minutes. Allow the food to cool before serving it to your dog. Keeps in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, the rest can be frozen in individual portions. I used Supper Cubes.
