History of respect

Landmark dates in respect history:

The IITF - Institute for Integrative Tourism and Leisure Research is founded within the framework of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Naturefriends International.

In order to competently handle issues regarding tourism and development cooperation, the Austrian Development Cooperation (OEZA) founds the organisation respect - Centre for Tourism and Development. respect shares an office with the IITF.

The IITF and respect merge and become the new organisation respect – Institute for Integrative Tourism and Development.

The independent organisation respect is dissolved. As its trademark, respect becomes a part of NFI for further specialising in sustainable development in tourism. The joint expertise and networks can now be used more efficiently and more intensively, also at European level.

In the 15 years of its existence, respect has gained national and international recognition for being a competence centre in sustainable tourism development. For example, respect has:
  • continuously carried out informational and educational work on development issues related to tourism on behalf of the Austrian Development Cooperation (OEZA)
  • developed numerous scientific statements and publications as well as educational material
  • published the magazine “Integra” on the topic areas sustainability, tourism and development
  • organised symposia on behalf of ministries in Austria (BMLFUW and BMWFJ) as well as the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)
  • co-produced the Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism and took a leading role in establishing the child protection organisation ECPAT in Austria
  • developed methods for the assessment of sustainability criteria in tourism
  • implemented educational projects as well as regional development projects in Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Rumania, Bulgaria, China, Zanzibar, etc.

The entire work of respect during the period from 1995 to 2010 has been archived on the former website of the organisation. The brochure published within the framework of the 10th anniversary of respect (in 2005) can be downloaded here.
