The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have decided to retain wide receiver Mike Evans for a few more years, announcing an extension on Monday. Now Baker Mayfield is sitting around waiting for the same call or text from his agent with the same news that Evans received. It only makes sense after the duo’s first year together, which ended up much better than anyone outside their organization could have imagined. In fact, it would be crazy for the Buccaneers not to bring Baker back unless they had a clearly better option.
„This is a good sign for the Bucs‘ offense. They don’t commit to Mike Evans if they don’t plan on committing to Baker Mayfield.“ – Keyshawn Johnson
It’s truly amazing what a trip around the sun can do. Last year at this time, nobody (not even Baker) knew what the future held for Mayfield. Last spring, he was coming off a season where he managed to win only two games in appearances with two teams, and his record was probably at an all-time low. In 2023, he bounced back and proved his critics (myself included) wrong by leading Tampa to a division title and earning his first Pro Bowl.
