Researchers from UCL and an international team have introduced a new method for classifying tuberculosis (TB) aiming to focus better on the early stages of the disease.
The new framework, published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine , seeks to replace the approach of the last half-century where tuberculosis was defined as either active (i.e., disease-causing and potentially contagious to others) or latent (i.e., infected with the bacterium causing tuberculosis [M tuberculosis] but feeling well and not contagious to others) – an approach that, according to researchers, limits progress in eradicating the disease.
