Get ready for a blast from the past this summer as the Carolina Disco Turkeys trade in their bell-bottoms, polyester, and sparkling sequins for salmon-colored polo shirts, ascots, and captain’s hats. The team announced this week that they will be playing as the Yacht Rockers, transforming the atmosphere at the baseball stadium from „Stayin‘ Alive“ to „Sailing.“
Yacht Rock is what you’d get if you married hair bands and elevator music from the 80s and had a baby. It’s a music genre embodied by artists like Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, and Hall and Oates – essentially soft rock from the 1970s and 1980s.
„Yacht Rock is smooth and classic,“ said team owner and president Greg Sullivan. „It’s got some weird hooks… Disco is too for some people.“
The logo, designed by illustrator Brittain Peck, who also created the main Disco Turkey brand, is meant to spark conversations according to Sullivan. Since its unveiling on Thursday, part of that conversation has been the comparisons drawn between the blonde, sunglass-wearing yacht dweller and Chief Wahoo.
While the Disco Turkeys‘ hometown of Winston-Salem may not exactly harbor waters where rugged yachts would be found, the Carolinas overall border the Atlantic Ocean and are home to major lakes and rivers.
The team will sport Yacht Rockers uniforms and host a Yacht Rock concert featuring the David Grogan Band at Wake Forest University’s Couch Ballpark on July 5th.
