Embracing their alternative hippie identity, the High-A Asheville Tourists first adopted this persona after losing (and tying) a Twitter bet with the Greenville Drive in 2017. The two teams made a wager that the loser of the season series would have to adopt a derogatory alternative identity – the Tourists would become the Hippies or the Drive would become the Rednecks. Despite finishing the season series tied at 12-12, the Tourists continued with the rebrand.
The temporary brand resonated well with fans, and this week, the Tourists, who have embraced the counterculture reputation of their hometown, announced a refresh of their Hippie identity. With the statement „It’s the identity you all know and love – with a brand new look,“ the Tourists unveiled an update to their Hippie persona.
The new look features the moon-based mascot of the Tourists as a 1970s-style Hippie, flashing the peace sign. The name „Hippies“ is displayed in a groovy font with a shadow effect, reminiscent of the 1970s era.
The Hippies will take the field on July 11th.
