West Virginia’s football program has unveiled new home, away, and alternate jerseys in the offseason—including one that honors the state’s coal mining history. However, missing from the rotation is a retro set.
The Mountaineers have never worn retro jerseys, although they did sport 1970s-style stickers on their white alternate helmets for at least one game in the 2013-16 and 2018 seasons.
However, a recent exchange on social media between athletic director Wren Baker, head coach Neal Brown, and a fan may hint at a return to the 1965 team for 2025.
The fan reacted to the New York Giants‘ new „Century Red“ jerseys by posting a photo of the Mountaineers‘ helmets from 1965, featuring a metallic gold base, light blue state outline, and stacked „WVU.“
Baker quoted the fan’s post, adding that he was a „big“ fan of the 1965 helmet and indicating that 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of that team, which won its second consecutive Southern Conference championship in the fall.
Brown then responded with eyeball emojis, a hopeful sign for those wishing to see the retro jerseys come to fruition next season. Perhaps they will be worn on September 13, 2025, against Pitt, whom West Virginia defeated 63-48 in 1965.
