Was verursacht gewöhnliche Warzen? Viren und Hautwarzen

When skin warts appear, it may seem like the harmless growths have come out of nowhere.

However, common warts are actually an infection of the top layer of skin caused by viruses of the human papillomavirus (HPV) family. When the virus enters this outer layer of skin, usually through a tiny scratch, it causes rapid cell growth on the outer layer of skin – creating the wart.

„HPV is everywhere,“ says dermatologist Conway Huang, MD, Associate Professor of Dermatologic Surgery and Cutaneous Laser Surgery at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. „We all come into contact with it throughout our lives,“ such as through handshakes, turning doorknobs, or typing on keyboards.

Scientists have identified more than 100 unique types of the virus. And most people will have at least one common wart at some point in their lives, usually on their hands.

Specific forms of the virus more commonly cause skin warts on the hands. Other forms of HPV are more likely to cause genital warts, although some virus strains can cause both.

If you have any type of skin wart, it means that at some point in the past you have come into contact with a wart-causing virus, although this may have been months ago.

The likelihood of the viruses causing warts is greater when they come into contact with damaged or cut skin. A small scratch or nail biting can lead to the formation of a wart. Similarly, cuts and scrapes from shaving can be a source of infection. This explains why warts can occur in the beard area in men, while they often occur on the legs in women.

Since everyone comes into contact with viruses that cause warts, the question arises of why some people get skin warts and others do not? Doctors are not sure, but believe that certain individuals have an immune system that is better able to fend off the viruses and prevent wart growth.

For example, children are much more likely to get skin warts than adults. This is likely because their immune system has not yet developed a strong defense against the many strains of the human papillomavirus they will encounter throughout their lives.

Just as some people are more prone to poison ivy, they are more susceptible to the viruses that cause skin warts due to their genetic makeup and immune system.

It is also common for warts to appear in multiple siblings in the same family. And children of people who had skin warts as children are often very susceptible to skin warts, says Brodell to WebMD.

However, experts still need to determine exactly what is different in the immune system of people who frequently get skin warts.

If you suffer from common skin warts frequently, it is important to focus on prevention and treat your skin warts promptly when they occur.

The first way to prevent skin warts is to avoid contact with the virus:

  • Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly and regularly.
  • If you work out at the gym, be sure to clean the equipment with a clean towel before use.
  • Protect yourself in the gym locker room and shower by wearing rubber flip-flops or sandals.

The second way to prevent skin warts is to keep the skin as free as possible from cuts and nicks.

If you suffer from skin warts on your fingers and tend to bite your nails or pull on the hangnails, it is in your best interest to break this habit. Also, be careful when shaving to use a sharp razor that does not tear or cut your skin.

If you get skin warts, it’s time to act quickly.

Most dermatologists agree that you can start with home remedies or over-the-counter wart removers.

If you choose to use an over-the-counter salicylic acid or liquid nitrogen solution, make sure to use it carefully. Follow the instructions carefully and note that it may take several weeks to several months for the entire wart to be removed.

If your warts are causing you emotional or physical discomfort, seek out a dermatologist who can freeze or burn the wart, or use immune-boosting medications.
