Was Sie tun können, um Kindern in Pflegefamilien zu helfen

von NFI Redaktion

May is National Foster Care Month.

Almost 400,000 children in the United States are living in foster care, which means they have been separated from their families – sometimes permanently – and need a safe, healthy place to live.

If you haven’t lived as a foster child like me, or don’t know a family involved in foster care, you may not be aware of how challenging these circumstances can be for children. As a Christian community, we have a wonderful opportunity to stand by these children and help them thrive.

One way is to explore the „Wait No More“ program by Focus on the Family, which encourages and empowers families like yours to get involved.

An easy but impactful idea is to purchase a special suitcase through Focus on the Family. When children are removed from their home and placed in foster care, the transition happens quickly. This often results in the child’s few belongings being put in a trash bag, which they then have to carry from place to place. With your donation of $100, you can provide a suitcase, a teddy bear, an age-appropriate Bible, and a sense of dignity and hope for the future.

So many Christians have questions about getting involved in foster care that I asked Julie Bagamary to join me at Focus on the Family with Jim Daly to share her story and answer frequently asked questions.

After Hurricane Katrina, Julie and her husband Randy wondered how they could help their community. At some point in their conversation, Randy mentioned adoption. Julie was initially hesitant; they had already raised four children of their own. She also saw herself as an „average mother“ and not an expert. However, months later, God spoke to her heart. For twelve years, she and Randy opened their home and hearts to numerous needy children.

Our conversation covers topics such as:

  • Getting involved in foster care.
  • Common challenges in foster parenting.
  • Benefits of short-term fostering.
  • Recommendations for foster parents feeling overwhelmed.
