Tom Brady’s father, Tom Brady Sr., defended Bill Belichick after his dismissal from the New England Patriots, but did not hold back when examining the main reason for his son’s separation from New England.

Brady Sr., 79, who described Belichick as „the best coach in football ever,“ subsequently criticized the coach’s social skills.

„Bill is tough,“ said Brady Sr.. „He runs a military system. It’s a different generation. Bill is a great, great, great coach. But his interpersonal skills are terrible. That’s the bottom line.“

„How many times did he say back then—15 or 16—that he wanted to win without Tommy? When he gave up on Tommy, he didn’t know what he was losing. They’re losing more than just a quarterback.

„Ego sometimes gets in the way of things. I believe that was the case with Bill. Now he’s in a situation where in recent years he’s been crucified by everyone and his rose has lost a lot of luster.“

According to the Globe, Patriots owner Robert Kraft even went as far as apologizing to Brady during his return at the 2023 season opener. Reports indicated that Kraft told Brady Sr., „I made a mistake“ regarding his son’s separation.

Brady was able to outlast Belichick, but others were not so lucky. The system broke down Mac Jones in just three years, turning the first-round prospect from a solid season as an intelligent pocket passer to a backup player in the 2023 off-season, a shadow of his former self and nearly incapable of delivering consistently accurate measurements. According to MassLive, Belichick wouldn’t even talk to Jones at the end of the 4-13 run.

Despite Belichick’s rough exterior, Brady Sr. told the Globe that he’s surprised the coach wasn’t hired by a team in 2024. Reports indicated he was close to the job with the Atlanta Falcons, which ultimately went to Raheem Morris, but he only had confirmed talks with them and the Washington Commanders. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network previously reported that Belichick would be willing to sit out for the right job next year. He ended the 2023 season 15 wins short of setting the all-time record for wins by a head coach.

„Bill loves coaching,“ said Brady Sr.. „But again, I don’t know if the teams are going to keep Bill—at 71 years old—I don’t know if they’re going to do everything for him to give him the full control that he wants. That’s the bottom line.“
