According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2022, an estimated 37 million children under the age of 5 are overweight and over 390 million children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 fall into the overweight category. Additionally, approximately 160 million children are living with obesity.

A child under the age of five is classified as overweight if their weight-for-height ratio is more than 2 standard deviations above the median of the WHO Child Growth Standards, and as obese if the ratio exceeds 3 standard deviations. In children over the age of five, they are considered overweight if their Body Mass Index (BMI) for age is more than 1 standard deviation above the WHO Growth Reference median, and if the deviation is more than 2, they are considered obese.

What are the causes?

Various factors contribute to childhood obesity. It is not solely linked to unhealthy eating or lack of physical activity. In some cases, obesity can be a hereditary condition, while in others, certain underlying medical conditions or medications can lead to weight gain.

Health risks of childhood obesity:

Obesity can impact a child’s physical and mental well-being. It can cause breathing difficulties, joint pain, and is associated with health issues such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Additionally, overweight children may suffer from low self-esteem due to weight-related bullying and are at risk of developing mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.

Promoting a healthy lifestyle:

Monitor their diet – A healthy diet is the first step towards a healthy weight. Ensure that the child consumes a diverse diet including fruits, vegetables, protein-rich foods, and whole grains, while limiting the consumption of highly processed foods, saturated fats, added sugars, and sodium.

Encourage physical activity – Children aged 3 to 5 are advised to stay physically active throughout the day, while children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 should engage in at least 1 hour of physical activity daily. Physical activities may include aerobic exercises like running, cycling, or dancing, or activities that strengthen muscles and bones.

Reduce screen time – Studies have shown a link between excessive screen time and an increased risk of childhood obesity. By limiting screen time, children have more time for outdoor physical activities, which could aid in weight loss.

Promote healthy sleep habits – Sufficient sleep is as important for maintaining a healthy weight as nutrition and exercise. Beyond weight control, adequate sleep contributes to strengthening immunity, increased attention, and improved mental well-being.

Lead by example – Children learn from what they see around them. Adults can lead by example by making changes to their lifestyle, such as eating healthy, being physically active, and following healthy sleep habits.
