The quarterback room of the San Francisco 49ers could have looked very different this season.
Buried in an ESPN report last week about Brock Purdy, the San Francisco 49ers‘ quarterback room could have looked very different this season.
„I remember to him [head coach Kyle Shanahan] ‚If we can get Tom Brady, we’re going to try to get him,‘ said Purdy. ‚And I thought, ‚Yeah, he’s the GOAT.‘ I understand that.‘ But somewhere deep inside me, I thought somehow, ‚Man, I just showed you I can play well in this system.‘ And we were just one game away from the Super Bowl.“‚
Mr. Irrelevant seemed to be a lock as QB1 for the 49ers at the start of this season–unless San Francisco could convince Brady to unretire.
Brady had previously been linked to the 49ers, as he grew up in San Mateo–just south of San Francisco–and was a fan of the team. According to ProFootballTalk, the team let go of Brady in 2020. With speculation that the seven-time Super Bowl-winning QB would retire, San Francisco became a potential landing spot.
In 2022, San Francisco had Jimmy Garoppolo, Purdy, and Trey Lance on the depth chart. Lance was traded to Dallas, and the 49ers opted for Purdy, Sam Darnold, and Brandon Allen as signal-caller options.
Brady stayed in retirement, the Niners stuck with Purdy and will play in the NFC Championship against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
