The Rockford Rivets on college summer level will pay tribute to the textile and manufacturing tradition of their hometown when they take to the field for two games this season as the Screw City Sock Monkeys. The nickname „Sock Monkeys“ stems from Rockford, Illinois’s claim to be the „Home of the Sock Monkeys“ – a claim the city can make due to actual patent disputes.

For over a century, Rockford has been the home of the red-heeled sock monkeys, the trademark of the sock monkeys. The city’s connection to the knitting history can be traced back to Swedish immigrant John Nelson, who invented a knitting machine in the 1870s and founded the Nelson Knitting Company. This story lives on today in the form of the world’s largest sock monkey – just over two meters tall – housed at the Midway Village Museum in Rockford.

The renaming of the Rivets uses „Screw City“ as a geographical identifier, a nod to the city’s ties to fasteners. In the late 1960s, Rockford was the fifth-largest screw producer thanks to government contracts, earning it the nickname „Screw Capital of the World.“

The in-house designed logo features a sock monkey running with a baseball bat and screw. The team will take the field on July 20 and 27.
