The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, a Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, faced a small hiccup this week when unveiling their Spanish-language „Copa de la Diversión“ identity. The team announced that they will play selected games this season as the Chaquetas, a Spanish term for the jacket worn by Mariachis. The brand is intended as a tribute to the Mariachi jacket worn by Dodgers reserve player Joe Kelly to celebrate the 2020 World Series at the White House.

However, when the team unveiled the brand on Thursday, they were surprised by comments from fans on social media suggesting they look up the term in the Urban Dictionary. If they had done so, they would have learned that Chaquetas has a second meaning – it refers to the practice of intimate self-gratification.

Meister meiner Domäne.

According to an article by Chuck Schilken in the LA Times, the team did not act alone in creating the brand. Grant Riddle, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Quakes, told the Times that the team reviewed the brand with Major League Baseball, local Hispanic-Latin community members, a Mariachi group, family members, and staff, none of whom saw an issue.

„We went live at 10 o’clock and we’re so excited,“ Riddle said in the Times. „You know, we’ve worked on this for two years, gone through this extensive process and all that. And then we got some comments that we didn’t understand.“

After initially removing the announcement from social media, the Quakes decided to give it another shot and embrace the nickname. Because if it’s good enough for the most successful team in Major League Baseball history, it’s good enough for the Quakes…

Meine Güte, ich frage mich, ob sie mit einem von ihnen ausgeht "Yankees".

The Quakes will play as the Chaquetas on April 13, May 16, and July 19.
