The Center for the Detroit Pistons, Isaiah Stewart, was arrested for assault on Wednesday after hitting the Center of the Phoenix Suns, Drew Eubanks, long before the end of the game.

Phoenix police issued a subpoena to Stewart and then released him. Stewart had already been disqualified from the game due to an ankle sprain. Eubanks continued to play and contributed six points and eight rebounds in the Suns‘ 116-100 victory.

„Around 4:45 p.m., Phoenix police officers were on security duty during a home game for the Suns at Footprint Arena when they were called to a fight between two players in the arena’s parking lot,“ said Phoenix Police Sergeant Phil Krynsky in a statement to The Athletic. „When the officers arrived, they were directed to the players involved by security. The players were 27-year-old Drew Eubanks and 22-year-old Isaiah Stewart. The officers spoke with both players and a number of witnesses to the incident. Upon arriving at the arena, they learned there was a dispute between both players. Witnesses said the dispute escalated when they saw Stewart hit Eubanks, causing a minor injury. Both men were separated by security, ending the fight. Detectives responded to investigate the incident and collect evidence. Stewart was arrested for assault, issued a subpoena, and released. The investigation remains active.“

Eubanks stated that the altercation happened when he arrived at the arena. They got into an argument before Stewart struck him. Security broke them up and waited for the police to arrive.

„The attack on Drew Eubanks was unprovoked, and acts of violence like this are unacceptable,“ the Suns stated in a release. „We fully support Drew and will continue to collaborate with local law enforcement and the NBA.“

Pistons head coach Monty Williams was aware of the situation and believed that the Suns should not have made a statement until the investigation was completed.

„The thing is to get all the information. The NBA will conduct an investigation,“ Williams said. „It would be a bit irresponsible if I came here and made a statement. I know the Suns said it was unprovoked; I think that’s definitely irresponsible. You really don’t know.

„This didn’t have to happen. There’s a time when the information is gathered, and then you can make a statement.“

This is not the first altercation for Stewart. In 2021, the Pistons‘ center was suspended for two games following an on-court altercation with LeBron James.
