New York City is making waves with the announcement of the newest team to join the Professional Bull Riders (PBR).

On Thursday, March 14, PBR unveiled the name and logo of the New York Mavericks, the league’s newest team. In the PBR team competition, two teams send out five riders each alternately, and the team with the higher total score secures the win. Once the schedule for a particular event is complete, the team with the most wins is declared the event champion.

As the first professional bull riding team representing New York, the New York Mavericks are poised to capitalize on the rapidly growing interest and enthusiasm for bull riding in the Northeast and across the country.

The Mavericks‘ logo features a front-facing bull and rider sporting a cowboy hat, with the rider’s face covered by a bandana. The bull and rider are enclosed in a shield with the wordmark „NEW YORK MAVERICKS“ and Western-style embellishments on top. The majority of the logo is navy blue and silver, with the bandana and the bull’s eyes in orange-red.

The Mavericks have also unveiled their own wordmark, which will be used in the top menu of the PBR website and other applications.

„New York City embodies the Maverick spirit like no other with its relentless energy and unwavering determination. I am thrilled to share our logo, which embodies this spirit, and the team’s social media channels where we will celebrate and engage the dynamic bull riding fan base in the Northeast as well as the passionate international community that calls this city home.“

– Chris Pantani, General Manager of the New York Mavericks

The Mavericks will host the PBR Camping World Team Series at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on August 9 and 10. This is the team’s first home game, and the first time a bull riding event will take place in the Brooklyn arena. They will be coached by two former PBR world champions: Kody Lostroh (2009) and Ednei Caminhas (2002).

PBR was established in 1992 and now features bull riders from Canada, the United States, Brazil, and Australia. In the 2023–2024 season, PBR is hosting 23 regular season events leading up to the three-part World Finals taking place from May 10 to 19 at the Dickies Arena and Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas, and the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. At the finale, riders will compete for a prize pool of $2.31 million, including a $1 million bonus for the PBR World Champion.

New York will be the 10th PBR team, with other teams in the league representing hometowns in the South or Midwest of the USA.

Bull riding may not be the first thing you associate with New York City, but PBR has a history in the Big Apple. For 17 years, they have been hosting events on their first „Unleash the Beast“ tour at Madison Square Garden.
