Oakland Athletics trägt neue Namen für Sacramento – SportsLogos.Net News

Despite comments suggesting that the Oakland Athletics were only known as „The Athletics“ or „The A’s“ at this point, they are moving to Sacramento next season, it seems the team is considering other, more traditional options.

Public records of the United States Patent and Trademark Office indicate that the Oakland Athletics registered two new names last Thursday, the „Sacramento Athletics“ and the „Sacramento A’s.“

Does this mean they will officially use these names during the brief years they spend in the Californian capital? Not at all.

New USPTO trademark applications this week for Sacramento Athletics and Sacramento A’s

Assuming the club is committed to using „The Athletics“ in 2025, why would they register a name they will never use? Well, it would protect them and the league from someone else taking the name and doing what they want with it. This also allows them to continue using that name (at least legally) if they change their mind shortly before the season.

I still believe the club should use a geographical identifier, rather than remaining location-less once the move happens. Sacramento Athletics, California Athletics, or even sticking with the Oakland Athletics are all better options in my opinion than playing without a market associated… but then again, I don’t live near the area, so what does it matter, right?

The Athletics will conclude their 57 seasons in Oakland at the end of the current Major League Baseball season in 2024. They will then move about 75 minutes northeast to their new home in Sacramento, where they will play at Sutter Health Park, the current home of the Triple-A River Cats, for the 2025 to 2027 seasons. If the construction of the new stadium goes according to plan in 2028, the Athletics will move to Las Vegas, Nevada, where we assume they will play as the Las Vegas Athletics from that point forward.

Once the A’s have completed their moves to Sacramento and Las Vegas, the franchise will have relocated four times throughout its history – a record for a Major League franchise. The club began in the first season of the American League in 1901 as the Philadelphia Athletics. They moved west in 1955 and remained as the Kansas City Athletics until they moved to Oakland in 1968, Sacramento in 2025, and finally (?) to Las Vegas in 2028.
