Nur auf Englisch verfügbare Playoffs-Ausrüstung in der QMJHL fordert Ermittlungen – SportsLogos.Net News

A provincial politician in Québec has called for an investigation after players from a team in the Québec Maritime Junior Hockey League were pictured celebrating their playoff berth in exclusively English-language attire.

Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, leader of the Parti Québécois, took to Twitter on Wednesday, March 27, to criticize T-shirts and hoodies worn by Drummondville Voltigeurs players with the inscription „2024 GILLES-COURTEAU-TROPHY PLAYOFFS“ alongside with no French equivalent.

„It is very concerning to see the league not fulfilling its duty to this extent. Even the Montreal Canadiens, who play in a North American league of international scope, have never dared to go so far due to their lack of consideration for the French language,“ tweeted St-Pierre Plamondon. „The QMJHL is the QUEBEC League responsible for the development of our young Quebec players. Its common and official language should be French.“

The PQ leader also posted a photo of players from the Chicoutimi Sagueneens with motivational slogans in English on the wall behind them.

Currently, the PQ holds only four of the 125 seats in the Quebec National Assembly. The Coalition Avenir Québec holds 89, while the Quebec Liberal Party with 19 is the official opposition.

In response, French Language Minister Jean-François Roberge told reporters in Quebec City on Thursday that he intends to file a complaint with the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF) regarding this matter. „I think that at the very least, this does not conform to legal principles,“ he said, as reported by the Montreal Gazette.

Sports Minister Isabelle Charest said that since the QMJHL is a private league, she felt she did not have the authority to impose French on it, but urged the league to act in good faith. „We are in Quebec and want our young players to speak French,“ she said.

A QMJHL spokesman said on Wednesday that the issue with the Voltigeurs had been addressed and it was a human error. The league acknowledged that the jersey should have been at least bilingual.

„Once the league was informed, they asked the Voltigeurs to rectify the situation, which will also be done,“ the league said in a statement released on Thursday. The statement also notes that „everything at the QMJHL headquarters is done in French“ and this would remind the 12 Quebec-based teams of „the importance of the French language in their daily operations.“

The Charter of the French Language of Quebec, last amended in 2023, states that French is the official language of Quebec and „the only common language of the nation of Quebec and one of the pillars of its unique identity and culture.“

The QMJHL changed its name in December 2023, with the M now standing for „Maritime“ instead of „Major“. This was done to honor the six active QMJHL franchises playing in the maritime provinces while retaining the long-used league acronym.
