The countdown to professional women’s soccer in Canada’s largest city has officially begun after AFC Toronto unveiled its crest and visual identity on Monday, June 3.

The Northern Super League club made the announcement on Monday morning on its website and social media channels. Initially signing up for the project that would become NSL in April 2023 as „AFC Toronto City,“ the final name dropped the „City.“

While the „AFC“ in AFC Toronto stands for Association Football Club like many European teams, the Toronto club explained in its press release that it holds a deeper meaning for them: Always For: Commitment, Change, Courage, and Celebration.

AFC Toronto opted for a color scheme of „Mighty Maroon“ and „Victory Vermillion.“ The former symbolizes „ambition and resilience“ while the latter „embodies energy and passion, reflecting the team’s bold and spirited approach to the game.“

At the center of the main crest is the „Anchor-T,“ symbolizing Toronto. The upward, bold angles capture the club’s dynamics, forward movement, and rallying cry of „Rise up.“ The mirrored 7s on either side of the T honor the seven founding members of AFC Toronto as well as the original six districts and Greater Toronto area.

The Anchor-T, along with a vermilion shield, forms AFC Toronto’s secondary logo. With its 11 stripes, it „represents the starting eleven on the field and symbolizes unity, persistence, sporting excellence, and the club’s strength on the field.“ The top and bottom stripes of the shield are left open to signify „the club’s commitment to continually push boundaries while creating an inclusive and fair environment.“

All these elements come together to form AFC Toronto’s main crest. The crest is surrounded by a circular shield with „ASSOCIATION“ on the left, „FOOTBALL CLUB“ on the right, „TORONTO“ at the bottom, and „2025“ at the top.

„From the beginning, we’ve been committed to taking a different approach in developing our club and its story, and we knew the key to that lay in involving the community and creating a brand built in, for, and by Torontonians,“ said Jill Burgin, Chief Marketing Officer of the club, in Monday’s press release.

The development of AFC Toronto’s identity was led by Sonntag+Nacht, Inc., a Toronto-based brand design company. Part of the process involved a full-day brainstorming session with business leaders, artists, media personalities, Olympians, and amateur athletes.

„This is an exciting time for soccer in Canada, and we can’t wait to kick off in the Northern Super League in 2025,“ added Helena Ruken, CEO of AFC Toronto, in the press release.
