Living with shingles can turn everyday tasks – from getting dressed to going to bed – into a painful ordeal. The trigger for this agonizing rash, which mainly affects older people, is the same virus responsible for another common but debilitating disease: chickenpox.

„Most of us never rid ourselves of the chickenpox virus,“ says Dr. William Schaffner, President of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. „It lies dormant in the winter like a bear in a cave. When someone gets shingles, the virus has reawakened.“

Fortunately, there is a vaccine that significantly reduces the risk of shingles. Schaffner, who is also a Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the school, spoke with WebMD about protection.

The shingles vaccine is recommended for all individuals over 50 years old who are not severely immunocompromised, meaning their immune system is functioning and they have not recently undergone treatments such as chemotherapy or high doses of steroids.
