Back in 1999, we were Livin‘ La Vida Loca with Ricky Martin, Jar Jar Binks made his debut in Star Wars Episode 1 on the big screen, and batteries and canned goods were flying off shelves as we prepared for the global meltdown that would be Y2K. Meanwhile, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans took the field for the first time on the coast of South Carolina.

A quarter of a century later, the Chicago Cubs‘ Class A affiliate unveiled a commemorative logo for their 25th season – a season, as noted by Benjamin Hill of Minor League Baseball, that was lost due to the same year as their 25th anniversary, 2020.

The silver logo, designed by Brandiose, features the team’s iconic pelican head, a three-dimensional number 25, and four stars representing four championships, all framed by a diamond shape reminiscent of both a baseball field and a jewel. The Pelicans won back-to-back Carolina League titles, including in their first two seasons in 1999 and 2000, and then again in 2015 and 2016.

Prior to moving to Myrtle Beach in 1999, the franchise was a Single-A iteration of the Durham Bulls from 1980 to 1997, then played one season as the Danville 97s in 1998 after Durham acquired a Triple-A franchise. Their 25th season in Myrtle Beach kicks off at home on April 5th.
