The Kansas City Chiefs allowed Kadarius Toney to board their charter flight to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl. With only one game remaining, the Chiefs have no reason to limit the pool of players who can play on Sunday. Even though this player disputed the reason why he was listed as inactive for the previous game of the team.
Toney was declared inactive for the AFC Championship Game. It was the sixth consecutive game in which the Chiefs listed him as inactive. They claimed it was a hip-ankle injury that kept him out, since he doubled his offensive offside penalty in Week 14 with a dropped pass that led to a pick-six in Week 15.
Before the start of the AFC Championship Game, Toney announced on social media that he had no health issues. He challenged anyone who said he was injured. His vulgar Instagram Live post went viral. Andy Reid addressed the post in a conversation with the media last week and said that Toney’s injury status was „definitely not fabricated.“
Toney was not among the Chiefs players who had a podium to speak at during the Super Bowl Opening Night on Monday. However, Michael Robinson from the NFL Network found him for a brief interview. On a night when many of the game’s top viral moments featuring the stars occurred, Toney still found a way to make headlines.
When Robinson mentioned this IG Live moment, Toney said his remarks were taken out of context. Statements directed at New York Giants fans were interpreted as directed at the Chiefs. I can buy that. Toney has been feuding with fans of Big Blue since he moved to Kansas City last season, so there is reason to believe that his most vulgar comments were intended for that fan base.
Once Toney finished explaining that his anger was directed at the Giants fans, Robinson cleverly interjected with the question: „Are you a number 1 receiver?“ If Toney had responded with a version of „I will always believe that I give my team the best chance to win on the field,“ it would show that he is a competitor who has learned not to interfere with his mouth. Instead, his response was, „Yes, if I get the ball.“
Toney completed his third NFL season. In his second season, he made two of the best plays in a Super Bowl win. The Chiefs were hoping he would make a leap and become one of their top wide receivers. Instead, he proved to be unreliable. Rookie Rashee Rice finished second on the team in total receptions during the regular season and ended the playoffs with two fewer catches than their leading receiver – Travis Kelce. Toney caught 27 passes during the regular season.
Whatever the Chiefs decide with their final lineup on Super Bowl Sunday, Toney is to blame if he is inactive for the seventh consecutive time. While in his second team since being selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Toney said into a microphone of the NFL Network that the reason he is not a star lies in targets.
He has enough talent to stay in the league in the 2024 season, but it is highly unlikely to be with the Chiefs.
