The reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, have signed player Matt Araiza, according to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN. as per

The announcement comes months after a woman dismissed a civil lawsuit in December. The lawsuit accused Araiza of sexual assault and group rape at a party. Authorities declined to file charges against Araiza, stating that he was not at the party at the time of the alleged group rape. Araiza admitted to having consensual sex with the then 17-year-old girl but denied knowing she was a minor, vehemently denying any other contact.

„We are proud to announce that our client [Matt Ariza] has signed with the #Chiefs,“ wrote JL Sports Agency, which represents Araiza, in a post to X. „We are grateful to Brett Veach, Coach Reid, and the Chiefs organization for giving Matt this opportunity. Matt has been through hell and back in the last 18 months. He has conducted himself with grace and humility, which is truly inspiring.

„Matt can move forward now knowing that this ordeal is behind him,“ the post continues. „He is excited to move forward as part of the #ChiefsKingdom.“

Araiza was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Coming from a historic college campaign at San Diego State, the rookie punter was released by the Bills before making his professional debut. During the time since his release, Araiza worked for the Jets but was not signed. One report columnist Dan Wetzel suggested that „numerous“ NFL teams hesitated to sign him due to a pending civil lawsuit.

The Chiefs are currently playing with Tommy Townsend, who finished the 2023 season ranked 15th with 20 punts within the 20 and a net yard per punt of 41.9. Townsend’s leg was a significant asset for Kansas City during Super Bowl LVIII, as two of his five punts pinned San Francisco inside the 20-yard line.
