Hintergrund

Chronic inflammation leads to various health conditions such as skin problems, respiratory and neurological diseases, metabolic syndrome, and cancer. Synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs are not well-tolerated by patients due to their significant long-term side effects.

Citrus fruit waste, including bergamot by-products, has shown anti-inflammatory properties in treating systemic, mild inflammation, and improving the quality of life for individuals with chronic inflammatory diseases.

Über die Rezension

The current review examined the anti-inflammatory properties of bergamot.

Zusammensetzung und Eigenschaften der Bergamotte

Zitrus-Bergamia Risso (Bergamot) is a native plant from the Calabria region in Italy. Essential bergamot oil (BEO) is known for its antibacterial properties and has shown potential anticancer effects in vitro studies. Bergamot juice, derived from citrus fruit flesh residues, is considered waste in the essence industry, but has attracted scientific interest as a novel source of several bioactive chemicals. Bergamot juice contains numerous flavonoids with biological effects, along with high concentrations of organic acids, minerals, vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, pectin, phosphates, and fiber.

Entzündungshemmende Anwendungen von Bergamotte und ihren Derivaten

Bergamot has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in experimental models, including reducing inflammatory symptoms in conditions such as gum inflammation and asthma. Bergamot derivatives have also shown potential in treating metabolic syndrome, reducing oxidative stress, and modulating inflammatory cytokine levels.

Schlussfolgerungen

Based on the study findings, bergamot contains anti-inflammatory properties that can be beneficial in the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Flavonoids describe bergamot juice, while limonoids characterize its seeds. Monoterpenes, coumarins, and psoralens are abundant in bergamot leaf oil. Bergamot extracts with high flavonoid content may combat acute inflammation and periodontitis by altering the concentration of inflammatory biomarkers. Bergamot essential oil helps relieve asthma symptoms by influencing various cytokines and enzymes that play a role in inflammation. Similarly, bergamot extracts may treat metabolic syndrome by modifying specific inflammatory markers.
