While Weathers was best known for his acting career, he also had a successful career in football. He spent most of his college days at San Diego State University, where he played as a Defensive End under Don Coryell. Weathers‘ football career continued as he signed with the Oakland Raiders in 1970, although he was not drafted. After his time in the NFL, Weathers played in the Canadian Football League as a member of the BC Lions for three seasons.
„When I discovered football, that was a whole different outlet,“ Weathers told the Detroit News in 2023. „It was more about physicality, although one feeds the other. You needed some savvy because there were playbooks to study and films to study to learn more about the opponent in a particular week.“
Following his football career, Weathers graduated with a degree in theater from San Diego State University and landed iconic roles in sports film history, most notably as Apollo Creed in the Rocky series and as golf mentor Chubbs in Happy Gilmore.
Weathers was also part of the coverage of the 2017 NFL Draft.
