Over the weekend, the Rapid City Rush of the ECHL honored the heroes of D-Day from their home state of South Dakota and beyond with special edition jerseys.

The Rush – the ECHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames – wore the jerseys on Saturday, March 30, as they hosted the Allen Americans for their annual Military Appreciation Night. Designed in collaboration with local artist Aaron Pearcy, the jerseys pay tribute to the 80th anniversary of D-Day while celebrating the proud history of military service in South Dakota and the United States as a whole.

The jersey features a grey base with graphics on the front depicting allied soldiers storming the beaches on D-Day, with fighter planes flying overhead. The Rush’s primary R logo is emblazoned on top. Names and numbers on the back and sleeves are engraved in a stencil-style distressed font.

Pearcy, a local tattoo artist and graffiti muralist, described creating the jersey as a „fun challenge.“

“I had a lot of fun finding the right mix of honoring the military, highlighting this moment, and having the ability to transfer it onto a wearable jersey,” he said on the Rush website.

“It wasn’t enough for me to just throw an image on there and call it good,” he added. “I wanted to make it cooler and somehow tie it into the cold hockey theme, so I wanted to also achieve that icy look and feeling with it.”

On the back of the jersey, below the numbers, is a patch from the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association that reads, „I SUPPORT COMBAT VETS.“ The organization will receive the proceeds when the jerseys are auctioned off after the game.
