The Raptors 905, the NBA G-League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors, are blending their parent club’s 1990s look with symbols of the upcoming Lunar New Year to create a fantastic-looking jersey.
The Raptors 905 unveiled the jerseys on Tuesday, January 23, on their social media channels and will wear them on Wednesday, January 31, when they take on the Maine Celtics.
The jerseys celebrate the Year of the Dragon from 2024 with a red dragon on the front of the jersey, similar to the style of the dinosaur that adorned the Raptors‘ jerseys from 1995 to 1999. The base of the jersey is dark gray with accents on the dragon in gold, silver, and white. The basketball held by the dragon is one of the current alternate logos of the Raptors.
„905“ appears in gold lettering with gray and red outlines on the chest, while the player number appears in gold to the right of the dragon. The sleeves and collar are accented in red and black.
The entire jersey features decorative cloud patterns known as xiangyun, found in many traditional Asian artworks. The sides of the jersey feature geometric squares, a pattern commonly found in Chinese art and architecture.
This is not the first time the Raptors 905 have celebrated the new lunar year with special jerseys. They previously introduced designs for the Lunar New Year in 2020, 2022, and 2023.
Saturday, February 10 marks the arrival of the new lunar year. According to the Bendigo Joss House Temple, a Chinese temple in Australia, those born in the year 2024 are believed to be happy, flexible, eccentric, imaginative, artistic, spiritual, and charismatic due to the dragon’s influence.
The Lunar New Year game of the Raptors 905 against Maine starts at 7:30 pm ET and will be „an incredible in-arena experience“ thanks to a partnership with the Canadian Chinese Youth Athletic Association. Fans can also purchase their own Lunar New Year jersey at the game.
The Raptors 905 play at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, about an hour’s drive east of downtown Toronto.
