The Carolina Panthers are a mess, with three million dollars in fines and two cruel owners. In less than a decade, this NFL franchise has become a symbol of mediocrity, especially when it comes to showcasing the incompetence of sports owners—especially in football.
„I am deeply apologetic about my behavior on Sunday,“ said Tepper in a statement after being caught on video throwing drinks at opposing fans, resulting in a $300,000 fine. „I should have entrusted the security of the NFL stadium to address any arising issues. I respect the NFL’s code of conduct and accept the league’s discipline for my behavior.“
Fans have started a petition to remove Tepper from his position. The Panthers have had the worst record in the NFL in recent seasons. Since Tepper’s ownership, the franchise has been a disaster, with six different head coaches and no successful seasons. Before Tepper, the Panthers had a successful run, but their fortunes changed after the change in ownership.
The horror in the owner’s suite in Charlotte is not new; it existed before Tepper even entered the picture. „I believe it is time to transfer the franchise to a new owner,“ wrote the late Jerry Richardson in 2017. He was fined $2.75 million after an investigation revealed the team was being led by a racist who sexually harassed women. „Thus, I will offer the team for sale at the end of this NFL season. We will not begin the sales process until after the last game is played, and we will not consider any requests.“
A Sports Illustrated story this year reported that Richardson made confidential payments for misconduct in the workplace, including sexual harassment and use of racial slurs.
This is the league where women rarely have the power to lead franchises, based on misogyny. This is the league that has never had a majority black owner, based on racism. This is the league that will continue to keep white men like Richardson and Tepper around as long as possible—or those who get involved in prostitution rings—based on capitalism.
The Carolina Panthers have failed ownership twice in a row due to the actions of men who should never be allowed to control franchises in America’s premier sports league. So, the next time ownership changes in the NFL and women and Black individuals are excluded, you’ll know it’s because the NFL doesn’t care about the bad PR that men like Jerry Richardson and Dave Tepper bring to the league. Why? Because they know it won’t stop you from watching.
