This is probably the craziest All-Star moment, both because of the meme and its memorability. John Scott was a journeyman, bouncing between various NHL teams and between the minors and majors.
In 2016, Scott was a member of the Phoenix Coyotes and won the fan vote to be the All-Star captain of the Pacific Division. The problem? Scott had only one point in 11 games – far from the „standard“ of an All-Star.
The team pushed him to withdraw his name from the game, but after winning the fan vote, he decided to stay and play. Weeks after being added to the roster, he was traded to Montreal, and the Canadiens sent him to their AHL affiliate.
Minor league players cannot participate in the NHL All-Star Game, and he no longer represented the Pacific Conference. The NHL even urged him not to play. Nevertheless, he played and represented no team, scoring two goals in the semi-final game. The Pacific team won, and he was named MVP, based on everyone sharing #VoteMVPScott on the internet.
