In a surprising move that will end a 77-year relationship with Adidas, the German Football Association (DFB) – the governing body of German football – announced this week that Nike will be the official supplier of the German national football teams from 2027 onwards.

According to the DFB, „Nike will outfit all DFB national teams and promote German football as a whole,“ they stated on Thursday, March 21. The contract runs until 2034.

„We understand the emotions involved. As a club, it is also a significant event for us when it becomes clear that a partnership characterized by many special moments over 70 years is coming to an end. The German Football Association, however, is primarily committed to German football and its development… In this context, the DFB must make economic decisions. Nike made by far the best financial offer in a transparent and discrimination-free tender process,“ added the DFB in subsequent tweets.

Bernd Neuendorf

„We look forward to working with Nike and the trust placed in us,“ said DFB President Bernd Neuendorf on the association’s website. „The future partnership will enable the DFB to fulfill important tasks in the comprehensive development of football in Germany in the coming decade. However, one thing is clear: until December 2026, we will do everything we can, together with our longtime and current partner Adidas, to achieve common successes.“

Adidas officials seemed surprised by the announcement. The company only issued a brief statement to Reuters and other media: „We have an ongoing contract with the German Football Association (DFB) until the end of 2026. The DFB has informed us today that the association will have a new supplier from 2027.“

The move comes just days after Adidas released new national team jerseys for Germany, which is hosting Euro 2024 this summer, as well as for other teams participating in this tournament and the upcoming Copa America 2024.

Germany is one of the most prominent national teams outfitted by Adidas. The company has been supplying jerseys to German and West German national teams since 1950. During this time, they have won four World Cup titles: 1954, 1974, 1990 (all as West Germany), and 2014 (as Germany).

Adidas’s contract with the DFB runs until the end of 2026 and includes the 2026 FIFA World Cup jointly hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
