France and Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has been suspended for four years from football due to a doping violation.

Italy’s Anti-Doping Agency Nado Italia issued Pogba a provisional suspension in September after he tested positive for testosterone during a Serie A match. He did not play in the game.

Italian anti-doping prosecutors requested a maximum four-year ban in a trial in December. The four-year ban is standard under the World Anti-Doping Code, but it can be reduced if an athlete can prove the doping was unintentional.

The 30-year-old confirmed in a statement that he will appeal the decision and insists he never took banned substances on purpose.

„I was informed today of the decision of the Tribunale Nazionale Antidoping and believe the decision is wrong,“ said Pogba. „I am sad, shocked, and devastated that everything I have built in my professional career has been taken away from me.

„When I am freed from legal constraints, the whole story will become clear, but I have never knowingly or intentionally taken supplements that violate anti-doping regulations,“ he continued. „As a professional athlete, I would never do anything to enhance my performance by using banned substances, and I have never disrespected or cheated my fellow athletes, fans of any of the teams I have played for, or against whom I have played. As a result of the decision announced today, I will file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.“

It is common for athletes to proclaim their innocence or ignorance after failing a PED test – even after being imposed a ban – but Pogba chose not to reach a settlement with Nado Italia, leading to a trial before the Anti-Doping Court, and he remains adamant in his denial. A person with direct knowledge of the case confirmed the ruling to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The case ruling was not disclosed due to Italian privacy laws.

Pogba’s second stint at Juventus has been marred by injuries, as he has only played in eight games since returning to the club in 2022. He also missed out on playing for the French national team in the World Cup due to a knee injury.
