Miami Heat-Forward Haywood Highsmith is being sued by a 21-year-old man he collided with earlier this month, who claims the NBA player’s reckless driving led to his leg amputation following the accident.

Alekxei Pino claims he was assisting a stranded driver in Miami on February 6th when Highsmith, driving a 2021 Audi A5, struck him. The lawsuit alleges that Highsmith was speeding, prompting Pino to have his leg amputated above the knee as a result.

TMZ obtained the accident report, in which the police stated that Highsmith was traveling at 45 miles per hour in a 40-mile zone. According to the report, Pino suffered a fracture to his left leg and possibly an arm injury, while Highsmith remained unharmed during the accident happened after The Heat defeated the Orlando Magic at the Kesaya Center.

Pino and his attorney are seeking unspecified damages estimated to be over $50,000.

According to the police, there were no drugs or alcohol involved. Highsmith was cited for reckless driving, with the police suspecting he was distracted due to „unknown circumstances,“ according to the report.

In a statement As communicated by his agent, Highsmith sprang into action after the accident, applying a tourniquet to the injuries and staying until first responders arrived.

Highsmith is in his third season with the Heat, having previously played for the 76ers overseas in Germany and in the USA in the G-League. This season, he started in 24 out of 40 games for Miami, averaging 5.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.1 assists.
