By definition. All the others who have performed at the Super Bowl halftime have either tried to be Prince, thus by definition not as cool as Prince, or have given up trying to be Prince, also by definition not as cool as Prince. There was always a slight chance that Prince would step into a scene for which he was far too cool or actively engage. But Prince also knew that he had to do every step to prove why he was the greatest performer in the history of pop music, and so he did. An added bonus is the Miami rain making everything look even more epic, including „Purple Rain,“ which would have felt so clichéd and scripted if it hadn’t been Prince.
Side note: I did not watch this game live, as it was the only Bears Super Bowl of my conscious life and I was chain-smoking on my porch at -2°C. Maybe if I had just stayed indoors that night, it wouldn’t have been so impactful for my psyche. Maybe. But even Prince may not be able to do anything about the psychosis related to the Bears.
