Patients seeking surgical treatment for obesity and related conditions in New Jersey have a high-quality option for treatment in a nationally accredited program that meets the highest patient safety and quality standards. The Center for Bariatric Surgery at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center is the first in the state to be accredited as a Comprehensive Center with Adolescent Qualifications and Obesity Medicine Qualifications, by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®), a joint quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that around 93 million adults in the United States are affected by obesity, and this number continues to rise. In 2020, the prevalence rate of obesity in adults in New Jersey was 28.6% compared to 32.2% in adults in the US, and the rate of obesity in children and teenagers in the state has more than tripled since the 1970s.

„Obesity increases the risk of developing diseases and other conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. These conditions can lead to premature death. Our team is committed to providing high-quality care, whether surgical or medical, to help adult and adolescent patients lose weight safely and improve their well-being.“

The MBSAQIP standards, Optimal Resources for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, ensure that metabolic and obesity patients receive multidisciplinary medical care, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. MBSAQIP accredited centers provide preoperative and postoperative care specifically for patients with obesity.

„I am delighted that Jersey Shore’s weight loss program has received this comprehensive accreditation, a first for our state,“ said Robert C. Garrett, FACHE, CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health. „Thanks to the commitment and expertise of the clinicians across our network, our network is further advancing healthcare throughout New Jersey.“

Jersey Shore University Medical Center’s commitment to quality care begins with expertly trained staff and the leadership of an experienced obesity surgeon. The program’s task is to continuously review surgical data to further enhance the structure and outcome knowledge necessary for safe, effective, and high-quality care of all metabolic and bariatric patients.

„In order to obtain accreditation for New Jersey’s first comprehensive center with adolescent qualifications and obesity medicine, our team met essential criteria for personnel, training, facility infrastructure, and patient care pathways, ensuring their ability to support obesity patients,“ said Vito Buccellato, MPA, LNHA, President, and Chief Hospital Executive, Jersey Shore University Medical Center and K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. „The team also participates in a national data registry that provides semi-annual reports on the quality of their surgical outcomes and identifies opportunities for quality improvement. I am proud of their commitment to providing our patients with the best possible care.“

After submitting for MBSAQIP accreditation, centers undergo a comprehensive on-site visit by an experienced bariatric surgeon who reviews the center’s structure, processes, and clinical outcome data. Centers that receive accreditation are awarded a specific designation level, depending on the number of patients they serve annually, the capacities for intensive care, the types of procedures offered, and whether they care for patients under 18 years of age.

„This accreditation, a first for New Jersey, complements the long list of high-quality accreditations and awards that Jersey Shore has received this year, including being named one of ‚America’s 250 Best Hospitals‘ by Healthgrades,“ said Kenneth N. Sable, MD, MBA, FACEP, Regional President, Southern Market, Hackensack Meridian Health. „I could not be prouder of the weight loss program team.“

Metabolic and bariatric surgery has proven to be effective in reducing comorbid conditions associated with obesity.* In collaboration, ACS and ASMBS have developed accreditation standards for metabolic and bariatric surgery to assist patients with obesity in identifying centers that provide optimal patient care.
