The Cleveland Guardians recently unveiled their Nike MLB City Connect jersey through a video posted on their social media accounts late Sunday night. The dark blue, red, and sandstone uniform is largely inspired by the iconic Guardians of Traffic statues near Progressive Field, which also inspired the team’s new name, „Guardians,“ and incorporates the team’s traditional colors but in a bolder way. There is also a nod to the team’s uniforms from the late 80s and early 90s.

“We really thought it was important, just like the program itself, to think about this younger audience and how we’re going to strengthen the connection to them, to our city, and our team,” recalled Jason Wiedemann, the Vice President of Brand for the Cleveland Guardians, in a conversation with SportsLogos.Net. “We wanted a design that represented a more striking version of our current uniform set, but still felt like a part of that [Guardians‘ uniform] family. We wanted to highlight not only our organization but also what makes Cleveland so special, the characteristics or personality traits of the city itself. And of course, we wanted to ensure that we honored our own history and tradition.”

The cap features the Guardians‘ „Diamond C“ logo in red and blue trim on a sandstone front panel, with bold red and blue stripes on the sweatband, echoing the design elements found on the jerseys and pants. The deep blue base of the jersey is inspired by the Berea sandstone used in the Guardians of Traffic statues, with an abbreviated „CLE“ in an Art Deco style on the chest and player numbers on the back also designed to look like they were chiseled from stone.

The jersey also features bold blue and red stripes on each sleeve and side, paying homage to the old uniforms of the Cleveland Indians. The pants, in a complementary sandstone color, continue the striped pattern for a cohesive look. The red socks feature a new Baseball Guardian logo not found elsewhere on the uniform.

The Guardians began the City Connect uniform process in late 2021, after completing their transition from the Cleveland Indians to the Guardians earlier in the year. The new City Connect jersey is the first design truly focused on the Guardians as a team.

Fans can catch the Guardians wearing their new City Connect jerseys for the first time on Friday, May 17, against the Minnesota Twins. The City Connect jerseys will also be worn on Sunday, May 19, and for all Friday home games for the rest of the season. An event at Progressive Field will celebrate the launch of the City Connect jerseys with special festivities for fans.

In conclusion, the new Cleveland Guardians City Connect uniforms pay homage to the city’s history and tradition while also looking towards the team’s future. The design reflects the unique characteristics of Cleveland and aims to strengthen the connection between the team, the city, and its fans.
