The Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League are looking into the past to move forward with the team’s first alternate jersey in 10 years.

The new jersey was unveiled on Wednesday evening, June 5, as part of the Elks‘ Kickoff-to-75 celebrations. They will debut it for the first time in their regular CFL season home opener on Saturday, June 8, against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The jerseys are predominantly green, with a tonal triangle pattern on the shoulders and sleeves. This pattern „represents the vast evergreen forests in northern Alberta and Canada’s largest urban park – the [North Saskatchewan] River Valley.“ Gold stripes run across each shoulder, reminiscent of the jerseys the team wore in the 1950s and 60s.

The sleeves also feature a new logo that harkens back to the team’s original 1949 logo. It depicts a shield with a band in the middle reading „EDMONTON ELKS FOOTBALL.“ Above the band sits an oil derrick, „representing the historical Leduc No. 1 site that sparked Alberta’s oil boom.“ Below the band are the team’s double E logo and a pair of antlers.

Whether 1949 or now in 2024, Edmonton has and will always be the most important part of our identity. This is an updated version of the type originally used. Capturing all decades of EE football as the antlers surround our iconic EE logo.

Above the number on the chest reads „EDMONTON“ – apparently only the second time the team has printed their hometown name on their uniform. The numbers on the front and back are green with gold outlines and in a narrower block font, reminiscent of the jerseys they wore from 1996 to 2020. Names on the back are also green with gold outlines.

According to the Elks, the development process for the new alternate jerseys took two years, „aiming to create a modern classic that new and old fans can celebrate the next chapter of green and gold football with.“

„In our 75th season as a club, we wanted to give fans a design that reflects our rich tradition but also isn’t shy to give our on-field look a fresh twist,“ said Evan Daum, Vice President of Marketing and Fan Engagement for the Elks. „We are very proud of what our club has meant to Edmonton and Northern Alberta since 1949. This jersey represents the icons that came before us and the bright future professional football has in our community.“

For the game on Saturday, the alternate jerseys will be paired with helmets featuring the Elks‘ 75th anniversary logo. The outlines of the helmet stickers will have the names of 90 fans printed on them. Fans who purchased a spot on the sticker also received a framed set of game stickers (75 logo, Canadian flag, CFL logo) and an autograph from an Elks player.

In addition to the home opener game, the Elks plan to wear the alternate jerseys two more times during the 2024 season. Specific games were not announced on Wednesday.
