The Syracuse Crunch from the American Hockey League paid tribute to the hockey history of their hometown by turning back the clock over the weekend.

The Crunch hit the ice on Saturday, March 30, as the Syracuse Canal Mules facing off against the Providence Bruins, the first known beer league hockey team that skated on the Erie Canal in the early 1920s.

The Canal Mules jerseys featured a cream base with wide blue stripes on the shoulders and hem. The front of the jersey showcased a screaming mule logo with the text „SYRACUSE CANAL MULES.“

Being a hybrid cross between horses and donkeys, mules are intelligent and hardworking animals that have been instrumental in the transportation of goods, people, and ideas throughout the state of New York.

The sleeves were blue with cream-colored stripes and white numbers with blue outlines. The collars were cream with white laces, and the Crunch’s usual logo featured on the right shoulder, while the logo of their NHL parent club, the Tampa Bay Lightning, appeared on the left shoulder.

The original Canal Mules team consisted of workers from the Greenway Brewery in Syracuse, who brought their homemade brews to the games played on the Erie Canal, an artificial waterway running from Albany to Buffalo. The team was named after the mules that towed barges along the towpaths of the canal.

The original Canal Mules disbanded in 1923 when the section of the Erie Canal running through downtown Syracuse was filled in.

Fourteen of the Canal Mules jerseys worn by the Crunch on Saturday were auctioned off on the ice after the game. Another jersey and individual Canal Mules nameplates were auctioned online to benefit the Erie Canal Museum.

The jerseys proved to be lucky for the Crunch as they defeated Providence 4-0.
