„Bird“ is the word for the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League, bringing some fighting spirit from the TV screen to the ice rink.
On Wednesday, January 31st, the Bruins unveiled special jerseys they will be wearing for their Rhode Island Comic Con weekend: Friday, February 16th, against the Bridgeport Islanders and Sunday, February 18th, against the Hartford Wolf Pack.
The logo on the front of the jersey combines Rhode Island’s hockey history with the state’s most famous animated family, the Griffins from „Family Guy.“
The Providence Reds played from 1926 to 1936 in the Canadian-American Hockey League and from 1936 to 1977 in the American Hockey League. Their jerseys featured a red rooster on the front. For 2024, the Bruins have reinterpreted the rooster as the chicken from „Family Guy,“ with whom Peter Griffin engaged in some epic fights throughout the series.
The base of the jersey is black, with red, angular shoulders and a red collar with black laces. The arms and waist feature wide red stripes with narrower white stripes underneath. On the right chest is an RI Comic Con logo, while each shoulder features a „Walking Bear“ logo with the bear resembling Stewie Griffin’s teddy bear, Rupert.
The Reds left Providence in 1977 to become the Binghamton Dusters. The franchise eventually moved to Hartford in 1997 and became the Wolf Pack – one of the Bruins‘ opponents during the RI Comic Con Weekend.
The next edition of the Rhode Island Comic Con will take place from November 1st to 3rd, 2024 at the Rhode Island Convention Center and Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence.
