More than 1,000 fascinating photographs in four categories were submitted to the NFI Photo Championship 2014 "Energy − in harmony with nature". Impressive places of energy in nature were captured from manifold perspectives, as were the different forms of energy generation and energy saving.

"The beauty of these special places of energy has once again brought home to us that nature is irreplaceable, and has shown that we should experience the environment consciously and with interest and plan our excursions responsibly. Photographers all around the world substantially contribute to making the diversity and characteristics of nature visible and thus raise public awareness for the environment," says Manfred Pils. The president of Naturefriends International, together with Rudolf Schicker of the Social Democrats Vienna City Council and Provincial Parliament Club (SPÖ-Rathausklub), and Josef Kaindl, deputy district chairperson, awarded the prizes to the winners in Vienna.

"Energy, our climate and the environment are closely interrelated. Sustainability and social justice in our use of nature and the environment have been important values for Naturefriends for many decades. With their photographs, the winners and participants of this year's Photo Championship contributed to an awareness-raising process for a climate-protective and ecologically sustainable energy future," says Manfred Pils, impressed by the results of the international championship and the 153 photographers from 23 countries that participated in it.

The winning photographs of the four categories and their photographers are: "Inselbaum" by Robert Sommer (Germany) in the general category "Places of energy in nature − colour"; "Nebelwald" by Barbara Seiberl-Stark (Austria) in the general category "Places of energy in nature − black/white"; "Nachtschicht" by Martin Seraphin (Germany) in the category "Renewable energy vs. conventional energy"; "Light off" by Casten Schröder (Germany) in the category "Saving energy".
In cooperation with the network European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN), certain excellent tourism regions which have been awarded pioneers for sustainable development in tourism by EDEN offered multi-day stays: the Western Pomeranian River District in northern Germany, the Latvian region Kuldiga and the Croatian region Nin. The Naturefriends house Feldberg in Germany offers a weekend for two including accommodation in the "Landscape of the Year 2013/14 Upper Rhine Valley". Additional prizes were subscriptions to the Austrian magazine "LEBENSART − Das Magazin für nachhaltige Lebenskultur". Cyberlab, a Vienna-based high-tech photo laboratory, supports the international Photo Championship.

The championship was organised in cooperation with Naturefriends in Austria, France, Germany and Switzerland.
