Together with the advisory council for water ecology of the “Deutscher Anglerverband” (German Fishing Federation), the German Naturefriends designated the Emscher in North Rhine-Westphalia the River Landscape of the Year 2010/2011.

The project aims at raising the awareness for the ecological, economical and socio-cultural importance of rivers and their surrounding landscape, initiating actions to conserve, protect and re-naturate them, and promote environmentally sound recreation activities.
