On 19 June 2008, the Austrian Commission for UNESCO awarded the title of Official Decade Project under the heading of Education for Sustainable Development to the project, “Natura Trails in Austria”.
The title is awarded by a specialist jury on a basis of a list of selection criteria for projects that translate education for sustainable development into reality. In the case of the Natura Trail project, the jury specially mentioned the comprehensive educational concept, the close cooperation with local actors, the contribution to sustainable regional development and the inclusion of the global component (Biodiversity Convention).
Sustainable development is a priority topic in the 21st century. The United Nations have proclaimed the period from 2005 to 2014 World Decade of “Education for Sustainable Development”. UNESCO supports practical implementation at the international level.
The purpose of awarding the title of Official Decade Project is to showcase and to give insight into the decade and its goals and to develop standards and mission statements for sustainable development as well as to sharpen awareness of sustainability.
