Natura 2000 network expanded by about 18.000 km2
Natura 2000, the EU's network of protected areas, has undergone a significant expansion. Nearly 18.800 square kilometres have been added, including a major addition of marine areas covering 17.000 square kilometres. They provide a vital refuge for many of Europe's rarest and most endangered species.

The latest edition of the European Commission’s newsletter focuses on the biodiversity policy. The new strategy to conserve and enhance biodiversity and ensure its sustainable use (EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy) is presented with its main targets and actions.

The European Commission has started an infringement procedure against Romania concerning inadequate nature protection in Sulina in the Danube Delta, one of Europe's most important wetland areas and part of the Natura 2000 network.
