Proclamation of the Landscape of the Year Flanders

On 17 July 2001, the region of "the old Flanders" on the border between France and Belgium was proclaimed "Landscape of the Year 2001/2002" in the small French town of Cassel. Every two years, the Presidents of the 21 National Federations united in the International Friends of Nature organisation designate a transborder, ecologically valuable or endangered region in Europe "Landscape of the Year". The "flat country" on the North Sea coast, celebrated in Jacques Brel's songs, with its dunes, marshland, polders, canals and fertile hills is united by a common culture, which has developed over centuries across frequently changing borders.
