The region selected as Landscape of the Year 1999/2000 was the Bohemian Forest/Šumava. This region, which surrounds the triangle where Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic meet, is a precious natural gem in the heart of Europe. With a great number of projects in the fields of tourism, agriculture and nature protection the region has been oriented towards sustainable development. The Landscape of the Year project was run under the motto "A landscape with bonding force!", because transboundary co-operation opens up a wide range of prospects.
